SAT, an acronym for Scholastic Aptitude Test, is an entrance exam for admission into bachelor study programs in the USA. For any undergraduate program, this is a compulsory criteria. This test has been designed by the College Entrance Examination Board, USA. This test basically tests the critical thinking and problem solving skills of an individual.

Who should take the test?

Students in their XI or XII grade can take the test for admissions into colleges in the US.

How to book for the test?

The test is conducted seven times a year in the US in October, November, December, January, March, May, and June. It is offered on the first Saturday every month. In other countries it is the same except for the fact that it is not offered in March. Candidates can take either a reasoning test or up to three subject tests as per requirement. Interested candidates can register online or by phone or by mail with the College Board at least three weeks prior to the desired date.

What does the test have?

SAT has three sections on Critical Reading, Mathematics and Writing. Each has a score range from 200 to 800. Total as obvious will be calculated from the summation of the three sections. The duration is around 3 hour 45 minutes including all formalities. Easier questions appear at the beginning leaving the tougher ones towards the end. The following areas are tested in each section.

  • Critical Reading: sentence completion, comprehension, vocabulary etc
  • Mathematics: Algebra, functions, statistics, probability, data analysis, number and operations, geometry
  • Writing: grammar, usage, word choice

The test costs around 43 USD for a reasoning test and 48 USD for each subject test.
